Racial equity is the attempt at achieving the goal of creating an environment where race is no longer a factor in the outcomes of a person’s life. Equity focuses on meeting someone where they are and serving them based on their personal needs. This is different from equality, which focuses on creating a space where everyone is treated the same. The goal of racial equity is to see every individual and acknowledge who they are, where they are and what they need. It is understanding skin color and racial identity and how it affects the experience a person will have in the world. One of the first steps towards racial equity is educating ourselves on what racial equity is and the people who hold marginalized identities.
